This first virtual experiment demonstrates the phenomenon of backward wave propagation in a left-handed (negative refractive index) metamaterial. Figure 1 shows a section of metamaterial with a refractive index of -2, sandwiched between two sections of right-handed (regular) medium of refractive index +1. Both media have the same intrinsic impedance so that there are no reflections at the interfaces. Both air sections are terminated externally by perfect absorbing boundaries (ABCs), and a source at the left extremity injects a monochromatic TEM wave.
