Dear Editor,
I highly appreciated your electronic newsletter MEFiSTo NEWS with the interesting article on how to model E-plane waveguide components. Also, I fully agree with the opinion of Prof. Jens Bornemann. In our faculty we have just started to use MEFiSTo-2D. Such a demonstration program is exceptionally helpful for teachers and students who want to develop and confirm their theoretical knowledge.
At the same time we must fight against the widespread tendency to underestimate the theoretical knowledge gained if the students and young teachers can rapidly generate complicated field distributions and easily obtain results by using computer design programs. I think that one of our main challenges is to convince the students that a combination of theoretical knowledge with computer applications is the best way to achieve technical and scientific progress in the future.
I hope that we can successfully meet that challenge. Also, I believe that we shall be able to say with Prof. Bornemann that the students will be better motivated to study the theoretical foundation of what they saw on the screen.
